Content management system (CMS) design

Computers of South Dublin is one of the few Dublin-based design firms capable of creating your web site with a content management system. Sites created in this way may be modified without programming knowledge or the use of specialised software, using only a web login that provides word processor-like editing and file management tools.

CMS web design also allows for different users to modify a web site according to assigned levels of privilege, making CMS ideal for collaborative work where submissions may come from multiple sources, with editorial review and publishing privileges being granted to selected users.

Some examples of web site applications uniquely suited to CMS design:

  • sports clubs — facilitating delivery of news items, game results, feature articles, schedules, calendars of events, and forums for fan postings
  • magazines and newspapers — a self-managed web site continuously updated with selected articles will maximise a publication's search engine rankings
  • artists, writers, and musicians — including calendars for tours and releases, descriptions of current and upcoming works, artist blogs, and forums for audience participation

In summary, any site whose content may change continually with time should be designed as a CMS web site, so that you and your associates (who understand the material better than anyone) can make additions and changes yourselves instead of through a web designer.

All CMS web designs by COSD are implemented with the free Joomla! CMS, an open source content management system containing free extensions for blogs, Internet forums, mailing list building, newsletters, online shopping carts, and hundreds of other possible features. Customers should always be wary of design firms offering to design a content-managed web site using their own proprietary CMS software, since this introduces an enduring dependence upon the that firm and usually a yearly software licensing fee.

Your CMS design will begin with a consultation with COSD to:

  • assess the computer, Internet, and web design knowledge of all staff who will be involved with the site
  • identify all content and features of any current web site that you wish to preserve in the new CMS site
  • enumerate and sketch out “templates” for the site — each of these is a distinct page layout that will contain changeable text and images

The price quoted for your complete design will be based upon:

  • the number and complexity of site templates required
  • any preconfigured additional site extensions such as blogs and forums
  • the time required to migrate content from the old to the new site
  • the level of training anticipated to provide key members of your staff with self-sufficiency in managing your site
  • (if applicable) the provision of an online shopping cart to work with your existing payment gateway

As with all COSD designs, unlimited email contact throughout the design process is included in the bid, for you to view drafts as they develop, and for us to be guided by your responses at every stage, until the design is complete according to your highest expectations.
