Internet-enabled databases and bespoke web applications

Some data processing requirements of your Dublin enterprise might not be suited to off-the-shelf applications, or you may need functions of software traditionally confined to in-house environments (such as databases and spreadsheets) to be accessible over the Internet. In both these cases, the same programming framework used to develop the Internet can be used to support your custom, database-driven application via a web-based interface.

Computers of South Dublin offers bespoke application design solutions that may provide any or all of the following features:

  • the ability to log in over the Internet, with a password, to establish security credentials with respect to database and file access, and maintain a profile visible to others
  • database functionality — maintaining tabular data, filling and manipulating forms, constructing and executing queries, and generating reports in any format or data type
  • Internet accessibility for your database — determined by the requirements of your staff and/or your customers
  • communication between your database and external devices — transfer, import and export to computer programs and databases

A simple example of a database-driven, bespoke web design would be a spreadsheet implemented as a collection of web forms, with individual users having control over distinct areas of data (see white paper). All applications are developed with the open source PHP programming language and the MySQL database, ensuring that they will run reliably on any web server without software licensing cost.

The following is a partial list of commercially useful applications illustrating the potential capabilities of a bespoke system:

  • online, interactive, self-paced training programmes
  • art gallery management — images of works with online sales and marketing tools
  • real estate and overseas properties — a distributed property database, shared between multple data sources and/or agents
  • file or image uploading/downloading, editing, and exchange
  • filling in online forms — creating PDF documents from entered data
  • invoice preparation and online archival
  • order processing — assigning, tracking, and fulfilling orders
  • online product support — knowledge base systems, downloadable software
  • transferring data between your web-enabled database and portable devices “in the field”

COSD is pleased to offer a free, in-person consultation in Dublin to any enterprise considering a bespoke solution. For global partners, we are happy to arrange this consultation over an Internet call, with shared desktop access if desired.

This consultation would include observation of all processes that are to be automated by the desired application and a discussion of what interactive elements the system will include. The result will be a detailed proposal with a bid based on the number of work days estimated to fulfil or exceed all ambitions of your project.

NOTE: Often custom applications can be implemented with less overhead using a content management system (CMS). In these cases, COSD will help trim your costs by applying, whenever possible, ready-made solutions already developed by the open source community, tailored to your unique requirements.

Please contact COSD to discuss your idea and determine if your goal can be achieved more effectively and economically with a bespoke application than with any commercial software package.
